United We Stand – Separately We Fall

Needed:

  • Approximately 20 red solo cups or their equivalent
  • Flat surface such as board or tray
  • Willing smallish volunteer

Lesson:

cups1 Corinthians 12:12 – For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.

Place one solo cup on the ground and have a volunteer try to stand on it.

Unless they are incredibly light they will crush the cup immediately.

You explain that this is like people that are trying to do everything on their own. The likelihood of them succeeding is very low.

Then set out approximately 16 to 20 cups that are staggered to be as close together as possible. On top of them place a small board or tray and then have your volunteer stand on this. They should have no trouble maintaining their balance and the cups should be strong enough to support the weight.

You can explain that united we are so much stronger than we are separately. The cups in the 2nd demonstration are no more strong than the one in the 1st demonstration. They are just all working together.

Together we can do great things! Unity is wonderful!

1 Corinthians 1:10 – Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and [that] there be no divisions among you; but [that] ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Psalms 133:1 – behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
