What you need:
- Glue – White Elmer’s glue work but the clear glitter glue is pretty cool
- Empty small mixing bowl
- Second small mixing bowl with half a cup of warm water
- Food coloring
- Contact solution
- Optional but better: a 2nd person to help you that knows how the process is done and walks you through the whole thing as you pretend to not understand any of it
- Optional: thin disposable gloves so you don’t get your hands repeatedly yucky
Preparation:
There really isn’t much preparation except for putting the half cup of water into the 2nd bowl and making sure it is still warm before you use it. The only other thing is to TRY THIS AHEAD OF TIME AT HOME until you are comfortable with the process. Sometimes the slime doesn’t quite turn out the way you want it, so keep trying and make adjustments until you are happy with the finished product.
About the lesson:
You may have seen this experiment before as it is becoming more and more popular but today we are going to use it to teach kids about God… and yes, it uses SLIME to do it… how cool? Kids LOVE slime and during the course of this lesson, you create some that they can play with and even take home with them depending on how much you make and how many kids you have.
There are MANY different recipes for slime so the one here obviously isn’t the only one you can try. We have tried quite a few and found that this one was the most predictable but your results may vary.
Lesson:
Goofy Teacher: Today we are going to make something that I think most of you here may like to play with. Does anyone here like SLIME?!
Goofy Teacher: Goofy Teacher: You do!? ME TOO! And I can hardly wait… oh boy! So, what’s the first step?
Assistant: Well, first we need to add this
ASSISTANT PULLS OUT THE ELMER’S GLUE AND HOLDS IT UP
Aha! Yes, that is us! Yep… so what’s the first step?
Assistant: Well, we just need to pour it into a bowl first.
Goofy Teacher: Oh great! I just can hardly wait! I love slime and I can’t wait to play with it!
Goofy Teacher: So its done now right? YIPEE! I can’t wait to play with it!
STICK YOUR HANDS INTO IT AND PRETEND TO PLAY WITH IT AND THEN GET DISGUSTED WHEN IT ISN’T SLIME
Goofy Teacher: Hey! What is this! I wanted SLIME! But all I have is this sticky gooey MESS! YUCK!
Assistant: Whoa! Wait a second there cowboy, it isn’t done yet! You have to complete the whole process before you can play with it!
Goofy Teacher: Oh… ok. I see. So there we are in all of our human glory… not too exciting and really not too useful are we? I don’t want to play with that the way it is. So what the next step?
Assistant: Well, to make it what it needs to be, we need to add something to it!
Goofy Teacher: Oh that’s right! Maybe we can add all of our talents and abilities! That will do the trick!
FROM THE BOWL OF WARM WATER PUT 2 TEASPOONS OF WARM WATER FROM THE 2ND BOWL INTO THE FIRST. WHILE THIS IS BEING DONE SAY THE FOLLOWING:
Goofy Teacher: Yeah, we also have a few talents or things that make us feel special. Maybe we are athletic or can play basketball. Maybe good-looking or can sing well, can play an instrument, talk well, are funny, have LOTS OF MONEY or WHATEVER! And oh boy! Look at it now! It’s perfect! WHOOOO HOOOO! Perfect slime! YEAH!
Goofy Teacher: Oh yuck, yuck, yuck!!!! I don’t like slime! This is gross. Who would want to play with this? (Glare at assistant) You said this would be FUN!!!!
Assistant: That’s because it isn’t READY YET! Not terribly useful is it? I mean, no one but a crazy person would want to play with this… it would just cause a big fat mess.
Goofy Teacher: Oh I see! She is right… If we rely only on ourselves and our abilities we are just going to make a mess of our lives. You are SO right. But that’s not all we have to offer God right? WE ALSO HAVE SOMETHING ELSE…
POINT AT THE FOOD COLORING
Goofy Teacher: What about that?! If we add that, everything will be so much better! I can just tell.
Assistant: Uh… ok but… that actually just represents our problems and our personalities. But since you insist.
PUT FOOD COLORING IN THE MIXTURE AND STIR IT IN THROUGHLY THEN REACH IN AND GRAB IT AGAIN
Goofy Teacher: AAAGHHHH! It is still gross! Why why why??!?!?!?! Forget it! Cancel the whole lesson! WE ARE DONE BECAUSE THIS IS GROSS! YOU SAID THIS WOULD BE FUN!
Assistant: Uh… actually, you are just being impatient. We are STILL not done yet!
Goofy Teacher: Really? There is more? Like what? OH, I REMEMBER NOW! What about the things we can do to improve ourselves like learning another language, going to college and getting a good job! That is the last thing we need and EVERYTHING WILL BE GREAT! Why don’t you add that also?
HAVE THE ASSISTANT PUT IN 1 TEASPOON OF BAKING SODA IN THE SLIME
Goofy Teacher: Oh look at that! We finally have it! FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY! We have something that looks good. Perfect slime at last!
Goofy Teacher: What is going on! Still! STILL! It is so bad! WHY WHY WHY? Now it is sticky and clumpy.
Assistant: It is STILL not finished! You are forgetting the most important part!
Goofy Teacher: I am?! WHAT AM I LEAVING OUT NOW?
Assistant: You are leaving out the one thing that makes all of the rest of it make sense and the one thing that makes all of the rest of your life come out ok.
Goofy Teacher: REALLY?! What is that? Wait a minute! I think I know…
BOTH TOGETHER: GOD!
Goofy Teacher: Yes! God… what was I thinking? Without God, this whole life really isn’t worth living! When we try to do it on our own we are just yucky and useless. We are a mess because we are missing the MOST important ingredient of all… GOD!
PULL OUT THE CONTACT SOLUTION AND ADD A LITTLE SQUIRT INTO THE MIX, STIR IT ALL UP AND THEN BEGIN TO KNEAD IT WITH YOUR HANDS. WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING, SAY THE FOLLOWING:
Goofy Teacher: The whole time we have been working away trying to make something out of our lives God is patiently waiting and working for you all the while. God is just waiting until we are willing to add Him to our lives. As the song says, “waiting patiently in line… He was there all the time”
God is a gentleman and He will never force His presence on anyone that doesn’t want it. He will never force Himself into your life but will wait to be invited and when we finally realize that without Him we are nothing. That only with Him in our life are we complete. When we finally allow Him to begin to work in our lives THEN he will begin to work on us.
To allow God into your life you begin with:
- Repentance
- Baptism in Jesus name
- Receiving the Holy Ghost
- Keeping doing what is right
- Go to church
- Read your bible
- Pray daily
Goofy Teacher: AND YOU WILL BEGIN TO CHANGE!
TAKE THE SLIME AND BEGIN TO STRETCH IT AND PLAY WITH IT
Goofy Teacher: Now you begin to have shape and form and become something useful that people enjoy to have around. NOW, who would like to play with this? NOW, that God is involved it is something COOL! It is something useful and something people want around them. You have joy, love, peace and so much more!
Tonight I am using this object lesson to teach on “God’s Timing.” When we pray for God to do something, sometimes it takes a lot longer than what we anticipate, or God has a completely different plan. If we choose to jump in before God’s perfect timing, things could get messy. Thanks for all you guys do!
Awesome! I love hearing how these can be mixed up and used for different topics!
