You Can Put Your Faith & Trust In Jesus
Needed:
- 1 gallon zip lock bag
- ~10 very sharp #2 pencils
- Pitcher of water
- Rain poncho (optional)
Lesson:
This lesson is about faith and trust so you need to get a volunteer that trusts you. BEFORE you ask for volunteers, make sure the bag, water and pencils are all out of sight.
Pick out your volunteer and ask them repeatedly if they REALLY trust you. Not matter what.
Bring out the bag and begin to fill it with water. Ask them again if they still trust you.
Give them the rain poncho and when they ask why they are supposed to wear it, ask them again if they trust you. They may not understand what is about to happen but you are going to be looking out for them.
Get 2 more volunteers and ask them to hold the sealed bag of water over the volunteer’s head.
Ask your volunteer if they still trust you.
Pull out the very sharp pencils and explain how you should NEVER have sharp objects around flimsy things full of water.
Ask your volunteer if they still trust you.
Explain to the class that you are about the plunge the pencils into the bag of water but that you are going to do your best to ensure that none of it falls down upon the volunteer.
Make it dramatic and one by one poke the pencils cleanly into the bag of water, bringing the tip out the other side talking about faith and trust all the while. TRY THIS AT HOME FIRST!!!
Don’t go all the way into the bag where the eraser end of the pencil also enters the bag (I did this…) this is no recovery afterward.
When all of the pencils are through the bag you can talk about how in life some crazy things that you cannot explain may be happening all around you but you simply have to put your faith and trust in Jesus and believe that He is going to be taking care of you.
Jesus has it all in control.

I used a child I’ve known since infancy and whose parents I know well, even though I did try it at home first. “You trust me, don’t you?” etc. While I was talking about the procession to Jairus’ house I interrupted with a brief retelling of the woman with the issue of blood and then I did this, talking about how Jairus had to be patient and trust Jesus, even when he got the hopeless news. It went over great. One of our teachers is also a minister and he pointed out that if Matt had reached up and tried to stop the pencils or grab at them he would have messed it up. Thanks again.
