Appreciate Your Momma – Where Did It All Go?!

About the lesson:

This lesson can go many ways and teach many things but in this particular one, we’re using it to talk about how much our parents and especially our mothers pour into us as children.

This lesson utilizes a magic prop called the “Vanishing Milk Picture” which allows you to “pour” three-quarters of a picture of milk into a cone of newspaper and then show later that the newspaper is completely dry. Super cool.

I had purchased this and it sat on my shelf for a while untouched until I was prompted to use it after seeing Bro McNeely from Battlefield, MO, perform it in a kids service (using a different teaching concept). It inspired me to pull it off the shelf and practice until I figured it out.

What you need:

  • Vanishing Milk Pitcher – The one I purchased and use can be found on Amazon for around $20 using the link below. They are likely available at other magic shops as well.
  • 1 cup of milk (or less)
  • 1 full sheet of newspaper
  • Time to practice until you are comfortable with the illusion

Lesson:

Who here loves your mama? Well, if you don’t, You’re a dirty dog.

Because Mama’s are awesome. They love you more than anybody else. They stick by you When no one else does.

Now I know that all moms are not perfect. Not all moms are exactly the same but God did something special for us when he created them.

You see, our parents do a whole lot more for us than we even know about.

The average cost of raising a child born in 2013 up until age 18 for a middle-income family in the U.S. is approximately $245,340. AND THAT’S A LOT OF MONEY!

But you see moms give of themselves constantly in it so easy for us to take it for granted.
They’re constantly pouring themselves into us and they are constantly giving of themselves.

MAKE THE CONE OUT OF THE SHEET OF NEWSPAPER

This cone is US! And our parents pour themselves into us constantly!

See how full this jug of milk is?

HOLD UP THE JUG

This today will be our mommas and they are constantly giving of themselves to make us better.

SLOWLY POUR A LITTLE BIT OF THE MILK INTO THE NEWSPAPER

Mothers love us unconditionally even when you make mistakes, big ones are small ones your mother will always love you. They never give up on you.

They hurt when you hurt, they stress when you stress, and they shine when you shine. Great moms can’t but help feeling what you are feeling. When they know you are nervous they’re shaking.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They talk you through difficult situations. They are great people to vent to because they don’t judge you if you have lost your mind.

They know the things you like most and try to make sure that they’re available when you need them.  My mom knows that I love Gatorade and Cheez-its and so those things are always available in her house for me.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They take care of the house, take care the meals and take care of the family.  They will make the most complicated most time-consuming meals ever only to be met with “I don’t like that” and then the next night they will make boxed macaroni and cheese and will hear that that was the best meal they’ve ever had.

When you’re young they have magical ability to erase bad dreams night.  They wake up out of a dead sleep, for the children, tuck them in bed again or maybe even let them sleep next to her knowing full well that she has probably slept the last good sleep she is going to that night because that child next to her is probably in the sleep peacefully while performing martial arts on her face.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They know how to replace things like the toilet paper roll that ran out for the paper towels are the light bulbs are the pencils for the markers or the crowns or anything else.

They understand the art of playing games and they play to lose.  Because it’s all about the kids not about them.  Candyland, Aggravation, Phase 10… you name it. They know how to play them all and they know how to lose gracefully and make their kids feel like 1 million bucks in the process.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They can do things no one else can, like put their hands in boiling water while they wash dishes and feel no pain.

They can open jars that a grown man cannot, they can carry cups filled to the brim with liquid and not spill them, they can open doors while they’re holding a toddler on their hip, 4 bags of groceries and carrying a grande caramel macchiato.  No one knows how they do it but they do it.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They can survive on little or no sleep forever seemingly.  They can stay up all night with the baby and still wake up at 6 AM to get the kids ready for school.

They have the ability to understand and translate the speech of a 2-year-old.  You might hear a bunch of consonants and vowels strung together in a gibberish sound but not mom. A mom knows that that child just said, “I want a fruit snack or I don’t want to take a nap.”

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They can somehow find the one pencil in the house that works during homework crunch time.

They can just make things work like kites, toys, meals from scraps and costumes from a cereal box.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

They believe in their kids and their dreams.   Maybe you just told them that you want to go to the moon or that you want to be a baker.  No dream is too silly for a mom!!!

A mom will stick up for you when no one else will.

POUR MORE MILK INTO THE CONE

A mom will pray for you, go on long fasts for you and do anything that she can to see you live for God.

POUR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE INTO THE CONE WITHOUT SPILLING

But it can be so easy to take all of that for granted… It can be so easy to just think that you deserve it; that your mom owes it to you.  That she should work 2 jobs as a single mom and take care of you because you’re just that good.

And if we ever feel that way… we throw away all the sacrifice and benefit of a great mother and is almost as if she never gave it to you at all.

WAD UP THE PAPER INTO A LITTLE BALL AND THEN SPREAD IT OUT TO SHOW THERE IS NOTHING HIDDEN INSIDE.

We need to thank God every time we think of our mom.

 How to perform the trick:

  1. The jug has a pitcher and an inner liner with a notch cut out in the front.
  2. Make sure the inner liner is secured to the milk jug with the suction cup.  You don’t want it floating up at the wrong moment.
  3. Pour milk into the space between the outer wall of the pitcher and the special lining installed around it. Use the included funnel to make this easy.  The pitcher will look like it is filled with milk from a distance.
  4. Place the filled pitcher and a sheet of paper on a table when you are ready to begin.
  5. Roll the piece of paper into a cone.
  6. Pretend to pour the milk into the cone and keep the lip of the pitcher obscured. Because of the notch or cutout in the liner, the milk will flow from the liner into the pitcher.
